Washtenaw County Data

The Digital Inclusion Task Force estimates that anywhere from 8,000 to 11,000 households in Washtenaw County do not have a computer due to financial constraints.

The Cyber Michigan survey from 2004 indicates that 30% of the households throughout Michigan do not have a computer. There is no individual data for Washtenaw County. However, Washtenaw County was grouped within the southern region, which also includes Jackson, Hillsdale, Lenawee and Monroe Counties. In this region, 25% of all households have no computer.

Of those who indicated that they do not have a computer, 32% of the state-wide respondents mentioned expense. This answer was particular common among younger respondents under the age of 35. Conversely, 36% mentioned lack of desire as the primary reason they did not have a computer. This answer was prevalent among older respondents, aged 55 and up. Note: The above data is not broken down by region.

The Digital Inclusion Task Force sought additional information in Fall 2007 by distributing a digital inclusion survey to select organizations. The intent was to target specific populations (low-income families, senior citizens, etc.) to verify a need exists. The aggregate data supports the Cyber Michigan results by showing almost 20% of the Washtenaw County community does not have access to a computer, with cost being the main rationale.
