About Washtenaw County
Washtenaw County
Washtenaw County is situated in southeastern Michigan, approximately 30 miles west of Detroit. Ann Arbor is the County Seat. The County has five cities: Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Saline, Milan and the recently incorporated city of Chelsea. These cities and 23 other townships and villages within the County operate under Michigan’s “home rule” status.
The County spans a distance of 30 miles east-west and extends 24 miles in the north-south direction. The 2000 Census counted a population of 338,562 with an expected population 350,000 by the year 2010, comparatively moderate growth for this, the sixth largest county in the state of Michigan. Washtenaw County is home to two major state universities –the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti.
